This piece, created from 54 teabags embroidered with colourful thread and supported by wire that converges in a vase, takes the shape of a bouquet of flowers. It is a reflection on the complex relationship between culture, law, and LGBTQ+ rights, particularly across Africa. The wire, forming a structure that holds the teabags upright, symbolizes the fragile connections between these 54 nations and their legal stances on same-sex relationships. At the time of creation (2011), 34 out of 54 African countries still criminalized same-sex marriage and relationships, a situation that, as of 2015, had not changed significantly.
On closer inspection, you’ll notice that some of the teabags are shaped differently: some are round, others square. This subtle variation represents the diversity of laws, attitudes, and experiences across the continent. I invite you to explore this detail—each shape carries its own story.
Why a bouquet of flowers? Flowers are traditionally given to celebrate achievements, to commemorate milestones, or to honor those who have fought for justice. This bouquet, in its vibrant colours and delicate form, is both a celebration and a call to action: to honor those leaders, activists, and communities around the world who stand up for sexual freedom, equality, and LGBTQ+ rights.
While the world has made progress in some places, there is still much work to be done. So, let us celebrate today: the ongoing fight for justice, and the leaders, activists, and individuals who continue to make that fight possible. Together, let us envision a world where all people can live freely and authentically, without fear of discrimination or repression.
